Row of tires

No matter how much we plan, tires will not last forever. Whether it’s the tire tread wearing out, tire pressure going down, or your tire maintenance light coming on, To make sure your tires are lasting longer, you’re going to need a tire safety checklist whenever you’re checking them.

At CB Chevrolet, you’re going to want to make sure your tires are in top condition at all times. Find out all about tire maintenance, what causes tire tread wear, and more below. Also, be sure to visit our service center for anything tire-related.

What Causes Tire Tread Wear?

No matter what the San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria roadways throw your way, you’re going to deal with tire maintenance. When it comes to tire tread, it’s very easy to get confused on maintenance. Hearing phrases like “Tire safety tread depth” may seem a little complicated. Yet, as part of your tire safety checklist, let’s look at what tread issues can occur:

  • Inner and Outer Tread Wear: Nicknamed “Toe Wear” or “Camber Wear,” excess wear on the outer or inner part of your tires can be the result of tire misalignment.
  • Center Wear: Any tire affected by this is probably overinflated. To avoid issues with your tire pressure, check your owner’s manual for the right PSI per vehicle tire.
  • Edge Wear: Underinflation of your tires is probably causing this.
  • Cupping Wear: This is part of a diagonal scalloping of the tire, indicating a serious issue with your vehicle’s suspension system.
  • Patchy Wear: If your tires have tread wear, they’re going to show up in patches and indicate your tires are out of balance.

Tips for Getting Long-Lasting Tires

Now that we’ve given an answer to that question, “What is tire safety tread depth?”, how can you get the most out of your tires? Remember to schedule regular maintenance and follow these steps:

  • Check Your Tire Pressure Regularly: Tires are capable of losing up to a pound per square inch of tire air pressure every month. Always check them on a monthly basis. Use the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and remember in winter, you can lose a lot and gain more in the summer.
  • Rotate Your Tires Every 5,000 Miles: Not all tires will evenly wear out, especially if your vehicle has all-wheel drive (AWD). Always remember to rotate them at least every 5,000 miles.
  • Get Your Tires Balanced: Beyond rotation, make sure they’re balanced. Uneven weight distribution on your tires can cause uneven tire wear.
  • Check The Vehicle Alignment Twice Yearly: If your tire wheels are misaligned, they can wear out faster, It’s easier to notice as your vehicle’s steering wheel might shake.
